50 HP merc Brown Band head

Does the above engine s/n6452225 have a head gasket or is it an all in one head/block? It was found (by a mechanic) to be drawing salt water into the bottom cylinder. It was determined only by taking a plug out. Mechanic advised owner to sell it as a whole????

Mechanic gave fairly good advise, Mercury inline engines do not use head gaskets, in saltwater you could have several things to cause water to enter lower cylinder: cylinder cooling jug eroded,exhaust chest eroded or lower crank seal out due to pitted crankshaft or lower bearing housing eroded. It will be cheaper in the long run due to frozen bolts and rotted aluminum to replace engine...
