50 HP Mercury - No speed

I have a 50 HP Mercury, 4 cylinder, 1985 model that normally runs well. Recently I found some of the stator wiring had disintergrated. I pulled the flywheel and followed this wiring back near the stator and spliced in new wires to the remaining old wires.
When I put the boat in the lake I found it will not run much above an idle. However on land with muffs on it does seem to rev up.
My question is what caused the problem? Was it the splicing of the wires or did I miss timing or something of this nature in reassembly? Just had a new hub and pump impeller installed also.

Thanks for any assistance.

If the engine ran before the repair and failed to after the problem is probably with the repair or the stator has failed

Thanks Laddies for the reply. I done the wiring however I had a shop do the impeller and the hub on the prop. Could either of the other two repairs cause the problem? If something was left loose in the lower unit, would it cause these symptoms?
Thanks again.

No I am afraid neither repair should cause that type of problem, I would check the repair of the stator with a DVA, also make sure the trigger move back and forth so you know that spark advance is working, if this checks out then check the carbs
