50 hp to much?

I have a 1967sears runabout boat and I was wandering if a sizzler evinrude 50 hp would be too much for it
the plate on the boat says its rated for 45 Hp but the guy I bought the motor from said it was the same size and weight as the evinrude 40 hp just bored out for more performance
just wandering if its too much or will work and be safe

what condition is the transom in? if its good dry wood, should be ok

The Sears 14 Is 345 lbs. Being rated for 45 the 50 is technically too much.
I my opinion the 50 will be significantly faster than say a 40.That was my experience going from a 40 to a 50.
45 to 50 may not be too much faster.I think the 50 is about 180 lbs.
Not sure where you would find a 45.
There could be a legal problem if anyone gets hurt resulting from the 50.
If the boat is sound I don't think you could tell the difference 45 to 50 as far as handling the motor.

I believe the Evinrude/Johnson 45 hp motors(1986-1997) were considered commercial models, and were basically de-tuned 50 hp motors.

I see no reason why the 50 could not be used in place of a 45, since the two motors are pretty much identical.

As a general rule, you should not overpower a boat, but you are only slightly over.

A 45hp rated/marked engine will be hard to find. The only ones I recall were Chryslers, Scotts, McChulloch or West Bends.

From what I've read the old Classic 50 Mercury was actually a 45hp.

1967 rated 45hp ,just look how heavy a 45hp engine was back then and look at what the weight of the 50 is you want to put on.
most boat makers rated the boats way under what they can take.
in 1967 a 45hp motor was pretty chunky.
if it says 40 then a 50 wouldn't be a problem, its the tearing the transom factor that makes the ratings not so much the weight.
you can get a 48/50/55/60 hp johnnyrude twin all exact same weight and dimentions so the hp rating is a bit useless really in these motors.
if the transom is good then just use the twin cylinder 50hp and enjoy the ride.

the classic 4cylinder 50hp merc was 50hp at crank and 45hp at the prop, they also came as 40hp when detuned.

I owned that same boat, and they are quite flimsy, so to speak. We actually tried a merc 100 on ours for about a day, thing looked like a bobbing cork. When we went back to stock, the boat ran well, scary on the top end, but it worked well. I think it's worth trying if you have the power plant sitting there for sure.
