50 hp year?

Looking at a 50hp Merc. The picture of the motor shows all the makings on whole engine to match the 1976 Merc. The serial #is 7080268 which does not match up with the markings on the motor. What year would that serial number match if not the 1976? The guy is insisting it is a 1986 but the markings are WAY different. Thanks for any all help!!

Canadian motor ??------Are the decals the brown copper ?-----Or red / blue hockey stick looking ones ?

According to maxrules, that serial # 7080268 is a 1976 50hp, 4 cyl., made in Canada model.

The serial # range is: 7068998 - 70888597.

If the guy wants to insist it's a 1986 model, it would be a 3 cyl. motor.

Thank you!! Definitely the 4 cylinder. Red/blue hockey stick. I had tried to tell him that and he insists that the Sierra parts guide says its a 1986........Not sure how I keep finding these people that insist on things that are the wrong information. Would anyone be able to tell be the carb it uses. The guy says they are missing.

Run away from this deal or no more than $100 for it.------The decals say it is a 76 / 77 model !!-----Sellers 50 years ago often mis represented motors by 10 years.-----No different today.

Only asking 75.00. I know I can get that in parts easily. Its just missing the carbs. Not sure if I am going to pursue it....I just wanted to confirm what I had thought was that it was definitely the 76 not the 86. Thank you everyone for your help. If anyone knows what carbs it used that would be an awesome help.

Carbs may be the least of the problems. Can you check for compression and spark? Carbs aren't needed for these checks.

There are no controls with it. With a rope could I hand pull it for compression? I am mainly looking for some parts off it for my 1979 Merc 50 hp. If controls and lower unit, reeds, etc match to the one I have I should be fine having it as a non running parts motor. How much should match up do you think? Mine being an American 79 to a Canadian 76?

As suggested earlier, Run. Some parts may swap, but merc often made on going slight changes to parts, and they may not fit or function correctly. Other changes between those years could be from a distributor ignition, to to an ADI system. Whether one can be substituted for the other? Maybe with or without mods, maybe not,
