Re: 50 pounds over the max

Most 5000 lbs. trailers have 2" ball standard. Thats only good for 6000 lbs. total (boat, motor, trailer and all the fluids and gear). If your trailer is a 2" ball you could be, way over the limit and will have to change coupler along with the rest of the upgrades. Be safe and good luck.

The diameter of the ball in it's self is not a good indication of it's towing capacity.

Ball size
(inches) Bolt diameter Capacity pounds

1-7⁄8"
?″ #2000
1″ #2000

2"
?″ #3500
1″ #6000
1?″ #6000
1-3⁄8″ #10,000

2 5⁄16
1″ #6000
1?″ #10,000

dingbat, your right and I stand corrected, thanks.
Just a 5000 lbs. trailer and 2" ball should raise a red flag. Something else to look at before spending the money to upgrade the trailer.

Re: 50 pounds over the max

thanks guys it worked out fine ..she pulled just great .
Not sure what pulling great has to do with not being overloaded. You are risking your life and the people around you using that trailer.

The boat weighs 5050# dry
100 gallons of gas is 600#
40 gallons of water is 320#
300# gear
1000# trailer

You are at a total of close to 7000# easily if not over and you have a trailer that is rated at 5000#. How do you not see this as a problem??

Why don't you get the boat and trailer weighed and then you will be able to make an informed decision whether it is safe or not.

It's called someone with more experience commenting on the behavior of someone with less experience.

It should be a lesson learned, but some are more hard headed than others.

Re: 50 pounds over the max

Hey Mac, I just read all thru this and basicly everyone said that from your information, the trailer was not rated to tow your boat unless it was for a very short trip! Then you blow all that off and doit anyway. Why ask for info when your not going to listen to it? Kinda sounds like you wanted some to say "Sure it'll work go ahead". If it did tow great then weere all gald youmade it without having a problem but how times you going to chance it? These guys are here to help but if your not actully going to listen then dont waste peoples time.
