$500.00 for dist cap & rotor???

I'm pretty new to owning a boat but is this the norm?? 72 65hp Mercury 3 cyl OB and I was gonna tune it up with new plugs/wires/cap/rotor and then I seen these prices. I have only seen them avail a couple places online and the cap on sale is like 200.00 and the rotor shaft(only way it comes) is 285.00 yikes and that doesn't included shipping/tax(9.5% TN). Anyone know where to find some any cheaper? Sure not like a car where you can get cap & rotor for 30-40.00 is it?

i looked a couple places and the prices were higher. sorry, maybe someone else has a few ideas. probably not the sort of thing that pops up on ebay either

Bill, The good news is that they do not need replacement unless they are cracked or broken.

Chris , well wouldn't you know I took mine off to look at it and it has a hairline crack on one side. Not bad on separation though so I took a little super glue and bearly opened it up and got me some in it and held it tightly together and it seem to hold good. Cleaned up the contact points inside and a little on rotor and put it back together. To be honest I can justify spending 6-7K for a new motor in my head better than 500-600.00 for 2 little peices of plastic to fix an old one you know. Besides I figure I will run it like this and see how she does first. Who knows once the wife sees the price of parts for this old motor she might just say go get a whole new boat but I'll keep at this one for now.

As long as there isn't a crack or an arc (carbon) track that involves one of the contacts, you should be good.

I'd be on the lookout for a good used one, though. E-bay, or the used motor parts yards rock for this sort of thing.

Well that makes it sound a little better! No carbon tracks , and the crack is sorta between two of the contacts not interferring with either. And it fires, runs a little rough but maybe plugs and wires will help some. type III ignition so no points, hasn't been run in water under load in at least 1-2yrs. When I got it shot it a little gas and hooked up battery that was still in it and it fired right up , took a little coaxing to get it to idle but I blame that on a cold start , didn't pump water so i ordered a new impeller and in the meantime picked up a new/used lower unit which was just rebuilt seals,pump etc. end of last year. Had to change shift shaft because of different top connection but got it on , fired it up and it pumps water like morning wood . had to replace exhaust cover gaskets because they were leaking. Still messing with choke because when you push the button to choke it to start the butterflies only close about half way. I can see the little stop thing that goes up into the solenoid and it is bottoming out, can that be adjusted? Because when you try to start it cold it won't start and I am assuming it is because choke doesn't fully choke it and you got to give it a tiny squirt of gas and then it fires right up and goes and when it warms up it will fired right back up no problem. Any ideas?
