I am buying a 1998 Regal 2500 LSR, but before I buy it I want a full inspection done on it. I called the only marine surveyer in Arkansas and he charges $500!!! Is it worth it? Should I just take it to a local Marina and have it inspected there? They charge around $100 per hour for service work and they said they could do it for around $250.

Thoughts?

1998 25' Regal..so i can assume your paying around 10K..to insure your not buying a VERY COSTLY floating problem....should you spend 500 clams to potentially save thousands in repairs....see my point?

$500 is pretty high. If he's the only Marine Surveyor in Arkansas, it sounds like he knows it.

I would expect to pay roughly $12 per foot for Surveying, give or take.

Should I just take it to a local Marina and just have the service dept look it over?

The marine surveyor works for you and you alone. There's no conflict of interest... he's not trying to sell you a boat or drum up repair business. Local marina might be okay if you know that they're completely honest... but is it worth $250.00 to take that chance?

Personally, I'd pay the extra to get an independent, unbiased appraisal of the boat's value and condition.

I would check it out as best as I could and if I did not find any glaring defects, then I would pay the $500. You never know, you might find something that will make you walk away from the deal on your own. If you really want the boat I think the survey is money well spent.

where in Arkansas is the guy located? Where are you located? If the two places are not near one another, you could be paying as much for travel expenses as for the actual survey.

... ask the buyer to kick in a couple bills and adjust price if a major issue is found or deduct some off the selling price if no major were issues found and you buy it.
