500 Merc sleeping 7 years , trying to wake up

Place shift handle on the control in neutral. Turn shift shat in lower unit untill it is also in neutral. You can tell because the prop will spin in either direction freely and turning the deive shaft will not turn the prop. Then reassemble.

get the shift shaft in the neutral position. the drive shaft just has to line up.
