502 MPI starter needed

Was out this weekend, this knuclehead kid next to me came crusing in. Which caused a tsuanmi, and went all over my distributor wires. Had a hard time starting it, and it kept dieing. I damaged the starter, its not catching. I was looking at it, trying to take it apart. There is 2 small bolts that are around 5" long. I pulled those out, and the housing is still attached to the engine. Where are the other bolts at that need to come out? I believe there is 2 underneath, i used a 13mm socket, and i can't get them off. Are those the right ones? Anyone have any experience with this problem? Would appreiciate a tip. Thankx

If you are talking about the two bolts that are installed vertically, those are the ones you need to remove. Sometimes, there is a bracket holding the other end of the starter.

Sometimes, those are hard to get loose. Get a fairly large breaker bar to break them loose.

They don't seem like large bolts. They do run vertical and the head of the bolt is underneath. There isn't room for a breaker bar, actually there is barely enough room for a 3/8 drive rachet. Are these the 2 bolts i need to take off to replace the entire starter? If so i will get a air rachet tool and hopefully that will get it off. Let me know thanks!

Now you see what some of us have to deal with every day.Sure ain't fun.

There are so many agencies to protect us against fraud and being cheated,But I know of none (except here) that advise against buying certain boats due to repair costs due to boat design

I've seen Sunbird V6 & V8 engines with starters up against stringers (great vibrations.....not the Beach Boys version.).Invader boats with NO access to the starter until you pull the manifold.Some Mercruisers installed with the 'cool fuel' system so deep in the hull,that if you can drain it,you'll spend 45 minutes just putting the drain plug back in.Volvo seawater pumps you can't access .Period.Mercruisers don't have a run on problem,except in certain boat designs.

My point is that boats are being built to please the buyer (always have).But the builders are disreguarding access for repairs,which causes their buyers great distress and expense for repairs.It also makes owners hate me,because of the charges I have to charge.

There are and always be problems in the boating industry,but at least in part the MANUFACTURER is creating some of the problems and passing them on to the owner.And the dealer.
