Any one know why the 502 has a shorter curve than a 454? Mr.Teague claims to set to a higher curve between 32-34 while merc says 28 degrees,i do know that too much will cause detenation and exhuast heat if too little, whats your thoughts on this topic?

My first thought would be different engines, different cam, different timing for that particular engine. Merc does testing on their engines to find the best parameters for running.

Who the heck is Mr. Teague?
Besides, there are differing opinions about everythiing. Why should timing on 2 different sized engines be any different. And why would/should the timing be the same in your opinion?

Re: 502 timing V.S. 454?

1. Basically, in this forum I like to keep things stock, by the book, and working for the long run for DIYers, while keeping the KISS principal in mind along with links to informaion and manuals available for them to go by.
2. Things change for those wanting to go fast.
Timing may have to change when doing upgrades and changes. Watching (READING AND UNDERSTANDING) what the spark plugs tell you, will be more valueable than anything you will read here from people with different engines/cams/compression setups.
