I've got a 50esl72c and haven't had the chance to order a manual yet. Was hoping someone could tell me what the idle timing and full advance timing should be. That would get me started trying to set the throttle linkage correctly. As it is now the motor will only start and idle with the throttle plates open a small amount and from what I've read and seen on videos the should be fully shut at idle (unless that only works with newer motors). I'm still trying to learn about these motors. Any help would be appreciated!

Sort of half right. The plates should be closed at idle. But proper cold start position is with the throttle slightly advanced. The spark is slightly advanced and throttle plates cracked open at the start position.

Be careful what you look at in videos.

Agreed with above.-------Looked at one video and the presenter was trying to take taper dowels out of a V-4 Johnson.----They would not move so he used a bigger hammer.-------Then in another video the same party was working on a V-6 and struggled with these pins.-----Trouble is he was driving these pins in the wrong direction !!!

I pulled the flywheel to check the key. It was ok. Getting 905 ohms from brown wire from stator to ground. 16 ohms on the trigger so I'm thinking those are ok. Still can't get it to idle without the throttle advance holding the carb plates open a bit. Idle jets are 3/4 of a turn from close (only place it seems to try to run decent). Still seems to idle rough. Has refurbished carbs, new coils, and new plugs. Resealed the hole where shift wires run down to seal off the exhaust leak. Will be able to take it out again in about a week to see how it acts. Seems to throttle up here at home but no load on the motor. Last time I was at the lake it ran ok for a bit then lost all power ran rough barely able to get it to low rpm, any more throttle and it just bogged out. About the only thing I haven't done (I can think of) is replace the fuel pump. If anyone has any other thoughts please let me know. My logical next step would be to try to clean the carbs.
