Which of these 2005 model motors is strongest ?
I see that the Mercury has 967cc with 3 sylinders and the Johnson has 737cc with 2 sylinders.
The displacement advantage of the Mercury seems huge and i think a 70hp 2S Johnson even had less displacement than that (920cc ?).

(I'm planning on a Starcraft 1600 OB and wonder if a 50hp 2S is enough motor)

#1. 50hp is too little for that rig
#2. the merc is a bigger, better(in my opinion) motor.
#3. try finding an older, say 1999 or 2000 or so 4 cylinder 50hp merc. youll thank me later

Agreed. Best motor I ever ran. Kick myself everytime I think about when I sold it.

Re: 50hp 2S Mercury or Johnson

Thanks for the answer. The Starcraft 1600 OB comes standard with a 50hp 2S Merc (in Norway). I have tried a 50hp 2S Johnson before and i thought the Merc was stronger, and perhaps strong enough but the boat is heavy for its size, i think.

Is the Merc 99/00 50hp 4 cyl a 4 Stroke with huge displacement or why do you recommend it if 50hp is to little ?
Personally i don't like 4 strokes with all the moving parts at high rpm.

The 4 Cyl 50 was a great motor, very smooth, but nearly 20 years old now. Stick with the 50 3 cyl merc or consider the Merc 50HP 4 stroke

Re: 50hp 2S Mercury or Johnson

I just bought a 17' Lowe with the 50 Merc 2-Stroke. I have about 5hrs on the engine and I am very happy with it. Boat planes nice top end is good enough for a 16 or 17' boat. Of course, 5 hrs isn't close to enough hours to pass judgement, but at this point I am very happy.

Good Luck
