50hp Force won't start

I have a '89 50HP Force and I had quite an experience this past weekend. Got to my favorite fishing spot and the Striper are biting like crazy. The stomach flu hits me shortly after so I need to return to the dock. Wouldn't you know the motor won't start...that was a long trip back on the Minnkota.

I've noticed a decrease in power over the past few months and it won't plane out with 2 people in the boat. I thought maybe I flooded the engine but that wasn't the case. I replaced the spark plugs today hoping it would solve both problems but the motor still won't turn over. Anyone have any thoughts on where I should start?

Re: 50hp Force won't start

You came to the right place. And welcome to iboats.
We need to find out what is missing.

First thing is a compression test.
If OK, Take an aresol sprayer and spray a shot of fuel directly into the carb. Try not to overspray it on the engine. If you do, let it thoroughly evaporate before trying to start it.
If it sputters, you have a fuel delivery problem.
If not, it is ignition.

A decrease in power as you described generally means a fuel problem, especiallly if it was a gradual loss.
If it is fuel delivery, Order a fuel pump rebuild kit. Don't freak, as this is an extremely easy/cheap rebuild job (in the scope of rebuild jobs anyhoo)... and they fail often due to modern fuels because the pump, using a rubber diaphram, wasn't designed to handle methanol-laced fuels, corn squeezins , or other modern additives... They devour the diaphpram.
This may, or may not be the end of your problems, but it is the logical place to start with fuel delivery hastles.
Next would be the carb (clogged pickup).
Lettuce know what you find, and we'll take it from there if need be.

Re: 50hp Force won't start

Thanks for the great advice! I have a clymer manual for this motor but can't find it anywhere. From what I've read from others on the forum the fuel pump rebuild won't be too difficult. Speaking of that - I want to go ahead and order a rebuild kit regardless and I want to make sure that I'm getting the right part. I found part# 18-7806 on Sierra. Is this the right one?

I have same motor and have just experienced similar problems but mine would only run at high idel. Did everything 12footer said plus took the carb. off and cleaned it real good. Should have compression tested it first. Found out the seal was busted between the 2 heads. Finally got a gasket and will have the boat running this weekend.
Anyone know what the torque requirements are for the bolts on the head? I was told to tighten bolts starting in the middle alternating working my way out. Run engine real good then when it cools re-torque again. Thanks for your help.
