I'm interested in a motor I found for sale on Ebay described as:

"johnson 50hp power shift 11 loop charged motor model no esl73r serial no. e3827749"

In general, would this be considered a reliable motor? Any common issues for this model that I should check for before bidding?

Can this be used with my normal gas tank, of would it need a special tank (pressurized)??

I really don't know much about evinrude/johnsons, any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
mick

Re: 50hp Johnson 'looper'

it is an hydro-electric shift, the shift switch and the shift solenoid are no longer available. it was a great dependable motor. 1978 and up are mechanical shift and much easier to work on.

1973 went to hydrualic shift-NOT ELECTRIC. Hence-"Power Shift II".

It's a decent engine without the electric shift issues.

A regular fuel tank will work fine.

Thanks for the info. For the starting price it's listed at, I think I'll put in a bid.

Find out the shipping costs ahead of winning it. An apparent bargain could end up being costly.

Re: 50hp Johnson 'looper'

Well, I went ahead and bought it and picked it up tonight. It looks pretty good. Started right up and idled well. Shifted into gear smoothly. The wiring under the cover needs a little attention, but overall pretty clean.

Can anyone help me with the year of manufacture for it? model no esl73r serial no. e3827749

Also, where I might find a repair manual and parts diagram for purchase, here on Iboats maybe?

Thanks alot,
mick

Yeah, I'm hoping it'll be more reliable than my '66 merc 35hp and add a little pep to the boat.

So, I think I've figured out that I have a 1973 motor. I see that Iboats has the original factory service manual here:

http://www.iboats.com/Johnson_Outbo...2404666--**********.645722464--view_id.440448

I'm assuming this is the best one get? Is there another one I should be looking for, or is this the one to have?

I've found the impeller here on Iboats, but there is no fuel pump kit listed for this year/hp. Where else might I find fuel pump/carb kits?

Thanks again,
mick

Good luck with it. If you picked it up then it must have been local enough to avoid shipping costs then ??

It was about a hour and a half away... not too bad, added about $40 to the cost for the gas to get there, but all in all a good deal I think. What seems to be a good running engine for $475, not too bad.

Thanks for the well wishes, once I get the manual and a fresh impeller installed, I'll take it out and see what it can do.
