how do I figure out what prop I have? i have a 1966 500 merc on a small 14 1/2 foot fiberglass, closed bow runabout. The boat goes pretty good with the prop on it, but it is very worn and looks to have been filed down a bit. I know I need a new one and or a spare. there are no numbers that I can find on it, so how do i figure out what i need?

LMAO,, Is there such a dealer with older motors? I guess this would be the same dealer that wanted $800+ to change the water pump/impellor., i know it's 10 1/4" and 11 spline.

Well if you are happy with what you have then take it to a prop shop and tell them you need another one !!!!
Need to know your top speed, hull and rpm at WOT to go further.

Re: 50hp merc prop

top speed- put speed adapter on fish finder, says 30 mph
hull- fiberglass, lol, v hull fairly flat
rpm- who knows, the boats from 1961,. engine 1966
I'm asking for experience with old motors and old boats,
with 2 people, full tank of gas, 2 batterys and trolling motor, hit 31 mph, but averaged about 30.2

Re: 50hp merc prop

i had a 1965 65 merc, ran a 15p prop. i would think a 50 hp would be in the 12p to 14p range.if you have a prop rebuilder near you he/she could tell you what you have .i think most 50,s usually run 13p as a sort of standard prop,at least most that ive seen had 13p.i just looked at michigan wheels prop selector site and for you appilication you should have 12p prop. mind you there are a lot of variables this gets you in the ball park.your prop is 11 tooth spline which fits 1962-69. 10 1/4 x 12p is part number 032086 which is a michigan match aluminum.hope this helps.

Re: 50hp merc prop

thanks,, that helps. I'm not to worried about trolling speed now as i put on an electric for that, but of course now its heavyier. I found a link to an old manual and apparantly it should be up around the 40 mph range, so I might have a fairly low pitch.
xtraham, mercury links can't be pasted. what was the link too so I can try to walk my way to it?

Re: 50hp merc prop

took it into a guy who does repairs on old motors and we found that it is an 11 pitch, now i've got to decide if I want to try an 11 or 12. This site gives me an error on the 11 in their store.
