Depending on what year it is, it would be on a metal plate, located between the transom clamps, a white sticker on the side of the swivel arm or you might also see it on the powerhead like the one in this link:

How many cylinders and is it a two or four stroke?

I am not sure what stroke it is or how many cylinders. I would like to show you a pic of it but not sure how to post a pic?

For the cylinders, how many sparkplugs are there?

For the stroke, do you pre mix the fuel and oil or is there a separate oil tank on the engine?

Gerry your so helpful but im not giving you much info and im sorry. I belive there are 4 plugs and im not sure whether to add oil to the gas as a 2 stroke requires or where to find a seperate oil tank. The women i got it from knew nothing about it as her husband died so she sold it. I have only had little 6hp evinrudes and johnsons and the largest i ever had was a 12hp nissan. This 50hp merc looks nothing like those haha. It sais 50MERCURY on the cowling and has thunderbolt ignition? And has a blue stripe on cowling also. I will be able to check for a serial number in a few days as i am at work until friday. Thanks for your help!
