That’s a really good rendition. My wife’s uncle can sing it almost exactly like Gordon did

When I saw Home Free (and acappella group) covering it, I wasn't sure ... although I like Home Free. But, yea, they did a neat job and the video is pretty awesome as well.

Wasn't until about 10 years ago I learned it was an actual event, and in my lifetime. Always thought just a song.

The Arthur M Anderson was trailing and ultimately looked for the Fitz. We see the Anderson alot in the harbor of Superior.....
There's a shipwreck museum on Whitefish Point. Artifacts from various ships. They also show a very interesting vid of the Fitz....

A while back I read a detailed accounting of the timeline of the wreck, including communications from those on shore, the Edmund, and other boats out at the time. Also included different opinions on what exactly finally sent her to the bottom. Was a good read

Growing up in Detroit it was cool every year when Mariner's would chime her bell for the Fitz. When Gordon died, they rang them 30 times.

I have a question, I have a coworker who insists the only reason we know about the Edmund Fitzgerald is because of the Gordon Lightfoot song. I beg to differ the wreck is noted because of the size of the ship and the fact it was the last freight ship to sink on the lake.

I think if you're native to the Great Lakes, your chance of knowing the story outside of the song goes up substantially. Great Lakes shipping is a little bit of a foreign idea once you're out of that region. Likewise, when I moved down to the SouthEast, I was surprised at all of the river commerce that is actually still at work.
Lightfoot certainly helped keep the interest and memory alive.
Yup

I guess that depends on where you are , like I would not know about it but for the song here in NZ , but I got all inspired and learnt a bit about it . Having said that I gotta say that being a boatie I do tend to find out about local sinkings/ disasters .
I have a railway ( coal train ....more on this later :)) not far from my home ( 100ish meters )......living in the upper lower 48 and not knowing the EF had sunk with loss of life would be like me not noticing the train had derailed dumping 1000's of tons of coal and killing everyone around ..........nah !

I will never forget. I was sitting at the kitchen table eating my breakfast. My mom had the radio on like she always did and heard the story.

There are rumors that the ANDERSON might be retired soon.----The ship that turned around to search for the FITZ in horrendous conditions.

A storm so rough that it just sank the "Titanic" of the Great Lakes, and Captain Bernie Cooper turns his ore boat around to go back out and look for the Edmund Fitzgerald. Buy that man a beer.

When you are in trouble on the GREAT LAKES you want to hope that someone is looking and trying to help.
