The lever you speak of is the slow speed mixture needle. It is very sensitive and should be open 5/8 turn to begin with . Adjust it for best slow idle once started and warmed up. Now, having said that, if it is not open at all (closed) the primer won't work and it won't start. Also, if the motor is not sitting level or if it is tilted forward, it will be hard to start because the fuel runs out of the port instead of into the motor. And don't be afraid to prime it. 4 or 5 pumps is ok.

The high speed adjustment wheel on the tank should be open about a a turn to a turn and a half for begining. Adjust that for best running at full throttle once it is warmed up.

Finally, are you sure it has good spark? Will it jump a 1/4" gap? Have you checked the coils for cracks?

Current fuel mix recommended by BRP is 20:1.

Re: '52' 5hp tn28

thanks. i found out that the float was stuck., so i got it free, i think. if i look up into the bottom where i unscrewed to make access to the float pin , i see a silver pin that i tapped onand now that moves freely just a bit. not sure if you should see a pin coming out of that grommet on top of the housing, i don't. before i released the float pin, gas used to trickled out of there. hopefully it is released fully.

now it starts if i put ether in. it seems it last till the ether is gone and shuts down. got to check the gap in the plug but i believe it is good. my mixture is 32:1 with super tech tcw-3 oil.(??). now if the speed mixture is that sensitive, maybe that could be a problem. the gentleman who i bought this motor from said it ran and i guess he buys engines strips them apart and fixes them and shows some. i hope there is no other problem. giving him the benny of a doubt........for now

stay tuned for chapter 2. you guys are very helpful thanks alot.
