I have a 1952 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 hp that is having a problem, maybe the impeller? Starting cold, water flows fine, but as engine warms it slows down and eventually shoots steam. Looked at the impeller and it seems fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: '52 Evinrude cooling problem

I suspect your impeller has lost its spring. Even one that "looks good" is likely bending too much under load to pump properly. The best fix is to install a new impeller, still available if you don't mind a little modificaton. Get an impeller for a later 5.5/6/7.5hp and then trim it to the right deck height using a belt sander. All the other dimensions are the same...<br />- Scott

the lower drive shaft on those motors has a sprig shock in it when it starts to go bad it gets too long for the housing causing the thing to bind up and over heat take the pump out look under the adapter plate see if the bushing looks like it got hot calumet marine has these shafts rewelded 708-862-2407
