5200 a bad idea?

Have a 1990 Chap,

Replaced the old broken pitot this weekend and unfortuntly could not use the same holes in the transom for the new pitot.

I squeezed 5200 into the two holes that are no longer being used.

After reading some threads today, is this a bad plug?

5200 should work fine. I prefer Marine Tex for that kind of repair, but you should be alright with the 5200.

Epoxy is a better approach, but 5200 will work fine. Make sure that no wood is exposed (take a close look to verify). Keep an eye on it over time.

if you got the hole sealed right.....5200 is just perfect......


BUT....if water gets in there because of a bad job........its a transom replacement in 5 years

You?ve just been inducted to the bad owners club.

I don't beleive that I see filling holes on the list of uses for 5200.

Check the bonding and sealing jobs this product can handle for you: fiberglass deck to fiberglass hull, wood to fiberglass, portholes and deck fittings, motors on fiberglass transoms, under mouldings, hull seams above and below water line. Center board trunk joints. Between struts and planking. Stern joints.

5200 is a perfectly normal sealant for this situation ...IF...you fill the hole correctly....

it is used all the time when we do core samples....of stringers decks and transoms
it will bond with the wood as well as the fiber glass hull....AND provide a bond between the two......

the marine tex will also help....but the 5200 is permanant....you just have to be sure the hole is filled

west system just wants to sell their product....epoxy....on a fiberglass boat......thats like putting a steel patch on a wood boat....


the correct method......if you wanna go that far....would be to mix up some peanut butter.....with milled fibers in it.....(structural) fill hole....poke wood in to make sure its filled....add more pb......let cure...sand....then gellcoat, let cure....sand and buff.........


or fill with 5200

But,see then you have a bright shiny new area...Soooo, what we will need to do is completely sand down the entire boat and apply 8 mills new gelcoat....but then whoops,the bimini looks old in comparison,and now that dirty motor sure can use replacement.....5200 works great......

Either will work, but I prefer Tex. I also insert a ss screw with it as extra insurance. Because of the lower porosity of stainless, if you choose to remove the screw at a later date, you usually can remove the screw and already will have a tapped hole.
