I decided to reseal the lower unit on my 54 because it still had the original seals and they leaked. Went and got a Sierra kit, 18-2684, and disassembeld the LU. Everything looked good, shaft wasn't scored too bad and it fit tight in the bushings, gears looked like new. When I opened the kit it looked like there was two drive shaft and prop seals along with all the other goodies I expected. Is this normal? I put in the shift rod seal and then drove in a shaft seal. I got to looking and noticed that two would fit cause they were half as thick as the old one. So what the heck, I drove the other one on top and it fit flush. Surely, one of the two them will find some virgin steel and seal.

The seals for the drive and prop shafts are different today than in 1954. You need to use two seals for each shaft. Install them like this []...if that makes any sense.

I have never bought a Sierra kit, but have heard a few negative comments about them lately on here, along with the Sierra impellers. Is it one of those "multi year - multi hp" kits?

Sorry WB, typing at same time.......

Makes sense to me although I didn't do it that way. Maybe I'll try that on my 58 18hp. Whenever I get parts from my tech, he just gives me one of each seal.
