I think I found the reason for no spark on lower plug. Added a few pics for your enjoyment.
See if you see the problem (I think).

If you look carefully you'll see the insulation worn off the black wire from rubbing on some moving part. I think this is my problem with no spark but I'm replacing points, cond, and wires anyway.

CR - I hope your having fun working on your motor. I've looked at most of your threads.

You might consider just adding on to an existing one, instead of making a new thread with each issue. Keeps all your info in one place.

The guys here are pretty sharp and like to help out, it might be nice if it was all on one thread. Just say'in

Its either a really tiny pic or my eyes are going :)

Happens alot, always keep the loop coming off of the condensor pulled down when tightening and the ground wire off the coil pulled in tight to the coil.

Anyboby got the secret for putting new sparkplug boots on new wires? I'm trying to run them all way through and then put on wire clip and pull back inside boot. Can't get wire to turn corner in boot.

HI Creek Runner. I've always used the crimp on style, 90 degree spark plug connectors. I first attach them to the s'plug wire, then slide the rubber boot on. Here's a vid on a guy using them on his motor. He solders them on, which is a nice touch, but I've never done that and mine work fine. You should be able to get the crimp on connectors and boots from NAPA, or other stores for about $5-$7 total.

I just did mine and yea I tried to pull the wire though the boot at first. it didn't work.

I didn't have the clamp/crimp on style, mine have a coiled wire that feeds back to a 90, turns down and has a pointed end that pierces the wire. I installed the clip and wet it down and pushed the boot on, it worked great.

The proper way to do it is to strip about 1/8" of insulation from the end of the wire, then fray out the wire strands. Now pierce the point of the spring thingy through the center of the wire, hopefully going through the wire strands. The frayed end will further ensure you have contact between the wire and spring. NOW, put one drop of oil on the spring and push it into the small end of the boot. The spring points toward the bigger opening. Job done. Now wasn't that easy??

You cut back about 1/4" or so of insulation, fold the wires over, stick the pin end of the clip into the CENTER of the plug wire, spray the wire/clip/boot liberally with WD40, then slide the clip into the boot. Done.

If you ran new wires now is a good time to check continuity from the coil to the boot to ensure all is well before torquing the flywheel.

Thanks guys, makes sense. I had done this before a few years ago and remember running the wires all way through, installing the spring clip with the point penetrating the wire and then pulling the end back into the boot. At least I thought thats how it went.

So you're saying cut insul back and expose wire core (for better contact?)and stab point of coil spring thru this wire as well as the core wire in center of insulated wire? Then lube and push into boot (small end) until coil is lined up inside boot to recieve plug.

Seems so simple, will try tommorrow.

The frayed ends will be rubbing on the circular area of the spring. The pin will go through the wire farther down. Cutting back the insulation exposing some just gives better contact as you guessed in case the pin is not perfectly through center or there is corrosion later on or whatever.

IT"S ALIIIVVVEEEE!
Got new boots on plug wires, sprayed a little juice in cyl, hooked up gas tank and after about four pulls she fired up. I was at home at lunch so only ran her a few minutes. Ran her in a garbage can in forward and reverse. Sounded real good.

Now if she will crank dependably, (I'll try it a few more times) I'll start on the next project which may be carb overhaul or lower unit or maybe some of the mech. issues with throttle and linkages etc.

Got the carb off and apart. The original float was glazed over with shelac, the low speed needle was bent (previous owner admitted this) the choke lever shaft is bent. Ordered carb kit and various parts. Couple of weeks waiting now. I will have her cleaned and ready when parts get here. Also fuel filter, retainer and screw were missing.

While I'm waiting for parts, I'm thinking about Impeller, water pump, etc. Any recomendations on lower end?

Well always a good idea on a new motor.

You know that you need to pull the powerhead right? You will need a new base gasket. Pay attention to the lower seal and related pieces when dissassembling.

I often use pre-made spark plug wires from the local auto parts store. They usually have two ends/boots on them, so I get two for onwe by cutting them in the middle and then sizing as needed. They are graphite core wires and everyone tells me that I can't use them, but I've yet to have a problem with them.

interesting that you use graphite core without issue, but ive wondered why metalic core was the only way to go?
