Little background on this engine. A guy I work with lost boat & motor in divorce abount 10 years ago. A few months ago the ex gave him the motor and fuel tank but boat was long gone. He in turn gave motor and tank to me. He said it was a tough ol' motor and he bet if I put some clean gas in it it would start right up. He used it on a flat bottom up in creeks and such when he had it before and was an avid fisherman. Only thing major he ever did was replace both coils.

I have rebuilt pressurized tank. Also did comp test on engine today. Dry readings were 72 on both cyl. with 3 or four good pulls. A couple squirts of PB Blaster in cyl and I got 82 on one and 87 on the other. With this in mind and the confidence of the guy that gave it to me I think I'll try to get her going without a rebuild.

What would you guys reccomend next maybe points, plugs, wires? I don't mind spending the money necessary for the lower end etc. if needed if I can assure myself that the motor is dependable enough to warrant repair.

Also, the re-coil assembly won't catch when pulling the rope. I have to push the fingers out with a screwdriver each time i pull rope. Are these parts available?

You can probably tell i'm new to engines, expecially boat engines and I really appreciate the help and advice on this site.

Worth a look under the flyhweel. Good chance that if your buddy used it 10 years ago that the coils were redone at some point. If that's the case, they're probably fine. If the coils are original - they WILL need to be replaced. If the condensers have the original fiberboard toppers, they're probably original and should be replaced. Newer ones will have a rubber topper. Points - unless they look worn or are severely pitted, they might clean up with some fine sandpaper and then clean with acetone and compressed air. Plugs - new Champion J6C plugs won't hurt a thing. It's been sitting 10 years (at least) so do plan on replacing the waterpump impeller, regardless of how "good" it may look. Lots of threads here on iboats on how-to.

Recoil - good chance it's either old grease gumming it up. Some PB blaster on all the moveable parts may free it up. Also a chance it's been apart before and things aren't aligned correctly under the center hub. If that's the case, it'll bind and won't work right.

I had the same problem a few years ago on an old Brooklure - basically the same recoil. See this old thread. F_R solved my problem quickly.

Yep, it would be a good idea to disasseble it and clean it up real good. Give it some fresh new grease and you won't have to mess with it for a long time. These recoils work good, when they're lubed and assebled right. They're buch better than the earlier versions.

You should be able to get a carb kit, tune up kit, and lower unit seal kit for under $100. Great motor you got there. Holler if you get stuck.

Don't forget about the impeller! If it fails, and I doubt the ex changed it, the motor can be ruined. The block has to be removed but it isn't too bad to do. 6 bolts hold on the block, so while the flywheel is off for the ignition check, go the rest of the way and make sure it gets done! When reinstalling the powerhead you will want to replace the seals at the top of the driveshaft where it goes into the bottom of the block, because a failure of that seal will allow water into the block and ruin the engine. Somebody must have a link to those procedures...

I have the recoil off and I think it had been installed wrong. The friction spring I think was off the hub. Anyway I'll clean this up and re-install later. New pull rope while I'm at it?
Great advice and links from everyone. I'm going to try to get her to run in a barrel. If she'll go, then I will start the top to bottom repairs.
What's the best way to run her for a short period as far as fuel. Rig up a gravity feed or just get fuel in bowl or set up tank with a couple gallons?
