Were you running it on muffs when out of the water?<br />If so, there was no backpressure on the exhaust. The backpressure from the lake water can be enough to stop the engine.<br /><br />It may be as simple as having the idle too low.<br /><br />Or it could be an indicator of a worse problem.<br /><br />Check the compression and spark on each cylinder.<br /><br />If compression is low on one cylinder the engine will run, but weak. If you find low compression, you need to find the cause. Could be a bad head gasket or worse, internal damage to piston, rings, or cylinder.
