55 hp coil resistance

My motor starts and runs. It cuts in and out and at times one cylinder seems to be lacking power. After running for a while it doesn't seem to get spark or enough spark, but I have not tested this. It gets to where it wont start and floods. One of my coils is cracked and I noticed when I got back from the lake I had left the key on. The coils were really hot and the cracked one was leaking resin with two drips. I am thinking that that coil is bad. I want to get the flywheel off so I can look at the points too. A new coil is just over a hundred dollars, so I was thinking of getting a used one for $40. Does anyone know what the resistance of the coil is for a 1971 Chrysler 55 hp outboard points no cd ignition? I want to check mine first, and then the used one when I go to purchase it. Thanks John. Also is there parts that might make the coils heat up and burn out like maybe bad points? Just want to make sure I fix the problem and not the result of the problem. :)

Re: 55 hp coil resistance

Ok, am I bad. I found the coil ohms for type B coil in my manual. It's 3.3 primary and 8100 for the secondary. Is there anything I should check to make sure the new one doesn't fry too, or do they go bad just on thier own fault? Just want to make sure I get the problem and not just the result of the problem. Thanks jmk :)

Check the fuel pump diaphram and check valves FIRST.Those coils don't usually go out halfway. But fail completely.Ethanol is messing up a lot of rubber in these older motors.J

Re: 55 hp coil resistance

I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump. It ran good for a couple times out after that, but now it runs the first time you start it, then doesn't want to run after it's shut off, untill it totally cools off. The coils though are leaking more than a couple drops of resin. I noticed today that there is a puddle of plastic and little stringy piles of melted plastic - resin - enamel, or what ever is in the coils laying at the bottom of the engine compartment.
