I managed to get my RDE17 running last night, and I must say it ran waaaaay smoother with the J6J's that were in it than with J6C's, but I'd like to get the air box off to shoot a little carb cleaner in directly. I was able to remove the 5 screws that hold everything in place, but the mixture screws are in the way of lifting the assembly up enough for the bottom mounting lug to clear the lip of the casing.

I did notice that the mixture screws are coming through brass sleeves that are hex'd on the end, and one of them does loosen by hand. Can I unscrew these sleeves and remove them without anything falling apart inside to give me clearance enough to lift the assembly up and out?

Thanks!

yes, and if it was loose you need a rebuild kit, with the packing and a new float. will do wonders for it. i have an RDE19. parts available at laingsoutboards.com.

please note that carb cleaner sprayed through the throat of a carb bypasses all the passages that need to be cleaned straight into the cylinder where it cleans the lubricating oil off the cylinder wall.

No, the air box was not loose at all. I just thought a little cleaner might help if there is any sludge or anything. But if it's gonna bypass what should be cleaned i'm not gonna worry about it then. But I do have a carb kit on order from this site. It is running very well, I'm just thinkn' preventative maintenance.

OH, and is the little glass bowl on the side secured with the metal hoop pretty much a dump and rinse? I can see into it clearly, looks like there is a spounge or something floating in there. Is this some kind of a fuel filter that needs to be serviced?

Put some Sea Foam into your tank next time out. It will do the job that the spray carb cleaner does, only much better. The glass bowl can be removed and cleaned, just be careful as they are breakable and sometimes hard to replace.

I don't know what is in your glass bowl, but the original ones were some sintered material. Just rinse it good and reinstall.

For future reference, there is a fogging hole in the silencer (airbox) for fogging for storage or squirting in some carbon cleaner-outer. Just pop out the little chrome button and squirt away.

The sintered filters get plugged up with gummed gas and are very hard to get clean, if not impossible. Replace it if it is stopped up. There was also a fiber type.

Yes, it is a fuel filter in the little glass bowl. They are about C$13 each @ OMC to replace and should be done if gunked up at all. They also can be cleaned somewhat, I have put them in a small tin of gas and shook it like crazy and it came out pretty good. Be really carefull when removing the glass though as it's usually on pretty damn tight and breaks!
