55 johnson fuel conversion

i have a 55 qd-16 johnson that i would like to convert to a pump system.the old tanks are a rare critter here in va.could anyone tell me a little more on this?thanks small block

Hello Small block<br />I have seen this done simply by putting a LOW pressure inline fuel pump inserted on the fuel line of the double line.This should be a 12 volt available in every car parts store.<br />The right way to do it is as follows.<br />It is first necesary to remove the intake bypass cover alongside the upper or lower cylinder.Next,drill the the appropriate size hole for a suitable fitting to pick up the cylinder vacuum.Install the cover plate with the fitting in place.Mount the fuel pump in a convenient location,and then connect the vacuum hose.Plug the hole in the intake manifold just below the carburator.This is where the airline gets its pressure from.I would do that also in the first offered solution so you can use a single hose.<br />replace the double hose quick connect with a single hose connector and you should be all set. good luck.<br />ps. sell the double connector on e-bay a lot of people are looking for them.

Actually, the mounting bosses for a standard fuel pump are probably already on the bypass cover. If so, it would be a simple matter of removing the hose fitting from the bypass cover, installing the fuel pump with base gasket and re-routing fuel hose as required to accomodate the single line fuel system. From a safety aspect I would advise against using an automotive electric fuel pump.<br /><br />-John

thanka for the help guys .john, when you say standard pump do you mean a pump from a 58 jonson ,when they went to fuel pumps?or will a newwer pump work? thanks small block

Yes, that's what I'm refering to. Although the old '58 style pump is no longer available, it does supercede to a newer style which works quite well - I just put one on my '60 QD21.<br /><br />-John

Hello<br />I have been having many problems with my pressure tank, this is my second one and I not hate them. The boat will idle ok but when I floor it there is not enough gas. I know its the pressure tank because I have gone to the engine and opened the cap alittle to release pressure and it will rev up like it should. <br /><br />Anyways, John could you please tell me what pump to buy? I went here http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...l pump&**********=239693004&*******=157310628 <br />but I am not sure which one?<br /><br />Is it possible also to send me a pic of where to mount the pump AND where to get vacuum from?<br /><br />OH one last question!!! Larson, what kind of outboard do you have? Model number handy?<br /><br />Your description sounds like a non-pressure tank. The pressure tank uses two-line hose. Do you have two line hose?<br /><br />Going with a marine electric pump isn't a good idea. If the battery dies, so does your outboard. If you spring a leak, gas goes everywhere. Technically, you'll need some sort of a cutout that will shut off the pump if the outboard stalls.
