I recently bought a boat with a 1971 55hp chrysler motor and wanted to know if some could tell me where I could get a repair manual for it as so I can try and do some maintenance on it. I will post some pic of it tommorow. I got it running last summer but never put on water because issue with the floor. So can someone tell where I should start with the maintenance. Thanks in advance.

Seloc and Clymer has the manuals available here at IBOATS and at your neighborhood marine mechanics.
#1 Replace water pump impeller
#2 Replace fuel pump diaphragm
#3 Check oil in lower unit . If it is milky looking CHANGE IT because it has water in it.
#4 Use NEW fuel/oil mix. Fuel can get old and condensation can put water in it .
#5 Clean battery connections at the battery and at the engine .

I am sure that there are other things but these are the most important right now.

Happy Boating

You might also want to perform a compression check too.

Folks will tell you the compression should be 145psi, as will the manual. However, I have run my 55 with 130 after re-ring, and 115 before with no issues. You need to PM me about the manual :)

The actual compression reading is not to be taking too seriously. Unless the compression is real low. The real important thing to look at is the difference between the two cylinders. The readings between cylinders should be no more then 10% apart.

So if you have one cylinder at 145 and the other at 110 then you'll have some issues to take care of.
