55hp rude 1976 powerpack or coil problem?

Last year I limped back to the ramp on one cylinder, left the boat sit in the garage all winter. This spring I thought maybe the problem was the coil because #1 plug wire was taped up. I switched the upper and lower coils, then there was still no spark at #1 but had spark on #2 with the bad wire. So I decided it was the power pack and purchased a new one. The boat ran fine for a while then started missing just like last year. Do you think it could be bad coils ruining the power packs?

The best way would be to power test the coil's, but it takes a coil tester to do this. Next would be a ohm's test. If any doubt, simply replace the coils. That taped up wire does'nt sound good.

Thanks, I have replaced the coils and the power pack. I'm just a little nervous about ruining another power pack. Do you think bad coils can ruin a power pack? If so then I feel better about solving the problem. If not then maybe I need to look for something else. Power packs are expensive, if I ruin this one it makes three.

Yes, bad coil's can damage the pack, or I really should say kill the pack. Make sure all connections on the pack, and coil grounds are clean, and tight. Then you should have solved your problem.

Thank You R.Johnson I still haven't tried it but I sure feel better being reassured that I have most likely fixed the problem. Will try to let you know the outcome. Thanks again!
