Removed the worn wrist pin bushings and find they are iron backed bronze. I cannot find a source for replacement. Hard to believe this common engine is without a replacement source short of rod replacement at 45.00 a rod! Help guys. Do I make them? I have not seen steel/bronze stock and I don't know if I can cut the thin slit and still have a light press fit. thanks

Make them out of solid bronze and have them machined to fit. DO not use brass, it is too soft. 660 or better bronze will work. C95400 is also a good choice. Rick

Wow! Obviously Rjezuit has some crazy knowledge about all kinds of stuff!
I have to ask--What do you do, just walk in a machinist's shop with the pistons in hand and say, "Can you make me some wrist pins for these out of C95400 bronze?" The reason I ask is I have an old '56 15 too and might want to do the same thing someday.
thanks,

Wow. JBJ, I agree, that's way out of my scope! I'd find a donor engine. That's why I have several of each engine I have :)

Hey Steve,
A fellow on the aomci site has a NOS evinude 50's 15hp block for sale--125$. Boy, would I like to have it! I know you guys could get a whole motor for that price up there in the land of the Maple LEAF. I've also seen a lot of NOS gears/clutches/ pinion gears on ebay lately. Wouldn't it be cool to put together a "brand new" '56 model from NOS parts? I'd run it till it flew apart in about 100years!
Later,

Cool. But that'd be a pretty expensive NOS 15hp though! And it'd be highly unlikely that you'd find all the parts.

And yes, engines are plentiful up here but i've still never found a 50's 15hp. But I sure have a lot of 18's (maybe 6 or 7)

Re: 56 15 hp evevrude wrist pin replacement

I was a machinist for 15 years and a mechanical engineer for the last 22 years. I have done similar repairs myself on lawnmower/generator type engines. The bushings should be from the bronze, not the wrist pins. Any good job shop should be able to set up and bore out the old bushings and lathe turn new ones. Then it is a simple process to either shrink or press in the bushings. I recently saw some NOS one on ebay for around $25 for the rod. It is up as a buy it now for $32.95 for rod. Item #15022503517. Part #277205. Rick

The 15 hp was produced from 1953-56, while the Johnson was only produced in 1956. I don't think I would call that "common".

Steve, sounds like we need to work out a trade.
