Motor starts and runs for a few seconds. Will not continue running unless pump button on fuel tank is constantly pumped. All fuel and air tubing is new. I am not familiar with these motors at all, any suggestions?

If it's a '56, it must be a 30 hp. Whether it's a '56 or a '57 ('58?), though, the pressurized tank is critical -- no fuel pump. It sounds like you have a leak in the tank somewhere. Make sure the hoses are tight and that the top assembly (handle, pump, gauge, etc.) is screwed down tight on the gasket. There are kits available to rebuild the tank.

I have a Johnson the same year and I had a small rust pin hole in the tank. It wouldn't leak fuel as it was right at the handle. If you have a way to pressurize the tank listen for a small whistle. Just like a bike inner tube with a small hole in it.
The previous advice is probably more likely to be right.

Hi Littleboy
The two most often places these systems leak is the tank cap gasket and the fuel line connector. I would say the connector is #1. These can be repaired by putting new o-rings in them. As they are expensive and hard to come by don't toss the connector. A good tank and connector is worth more than the motor.

Thanks for the help! Do you know where I can get gaskets for the top of the tank and O-rings for the connector?

Try American Outboard in Cordova, Maryland. They have a website (would post but don't have it handy) -- Give them a call and they will send the gasket and O rings. (a little slow responding to email, in my experience)

Good luck.
