I'm trying to fix up on old cd-12. I've changed out the ignition parts, the impeller and rebuilt the carb. I tried to start it over labor day but couldn't due to fact that I could keep the motor from flipping up out of the water. The recoil starter was pretty tough to pull. Should the little lock mechanism that locks the drive shaft to the transom bracket be adjusted so that it locks when the engine is in neutral? Also, I've read somewhere where you should put of few drops of fuel in the cylinders to lube them up. I didn't have a chance to do that. Would that help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try pulling the plugs out and turning it slowly by hand? does it turn easily?

Re: 56 5.5 Johnson

I'll check the shock abosorber, but I think its okay. I think it might have something to do with the coils or even how the new plug wires are installed. I can't keep the throttle in the Start position when I pull the rope. It wants to move. Prior to changing the ignition parts out, it turned over pretty easy, the compression is good etc. Thanks for your help.

If the throttle moves when you pull the rope it's definitely the coils hitting on the inside. Take off the flywheel and realign them.

The coils need to be aligned after replacement, according to the manual there's an OMC tool that can be used or you need to get a straightedge out to make sure the flywheel is clearing the coils. Great motor.

Make sure the ends of the coils are flush with the boss/base, then tighten the retaining screws/bolts. There may also be an adjustment screw that allows you to set the resistance of the mag plate, too loose and it will slop around, too tight and it advances/retards poorly. The mag plate/advance should move easily, but stay where you put it.

The tilt lock is a little latch on the front face of the mounting bracket. When pushed down and latched it releases the lock when unlatched it locks the motor down.If an object is struck it will release.
