56 Johnson Javelin, new battery but won't do a thing

Hi everyone. I started on here in 2012 restoring a vintage boat and engine. I finished it but after a couple years of being too busy to use it, I have decided to gift it to a wonderful family with three kids who practically live on lake water and sunshine. I was getting it all ready to give to them this weekend but hit a glitch and I need your help please. It's a 30 hp 1956 Johnson Javelin, electric start, remote controls. I went to barrel test it and after charging the battery for a full day (after it sat for a year), it just wasn't holding a charge. I tried to start it and the motor head jiggled a bit then stopped, it never turned over but it DID try. I wheeled it into the garage for the night with plans to buy a new battery today. The only thing after the failed attempted start I did to it was to replace the carb needles, the muffler and the face plate because I'd had them off to rebuild the carb last Fall and hadn't replaced them afterwards (although I covered everything up so nothing could get in. This morning I bought a new battery, installed 2 new spark plugs and put in fresh gas. Went to start it and nothing happened. Not a click, not a sound, not a shudder. Zilch. I took the battery back to the store to have them test it and it's perfectly fine, fully charged. They gave me another just in case. Took that home and exact same scenario. I traced every single wire I'd done in previous repairs (I moved the ignition button to the front vs how it was set up when I first got it (a solenoid with a button underneath at the rear of the boat) I did that change several years ago and it's worked great so that's not new. I just wanted to be sure no wires had somehow come undone and I found none. I checked the starter and it's flywheel was in the up position, although not stuck, partially engaged probably from the too weak attempt to start with the old battery. I spun it back down but that didn't help. It's almost like there's a kill-switch activated or a fuse blown with this total loss of electricity to start the motor. I really, really wanted to give the boat to this family for the holiday weekend. They are so very excited about it, but I must be sure it's in good working order before I do that. I've given up for the night and will start in the morning but I have no idea what new to check. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I'm sorry for the long post.

Look for some loose or bad connections in your battery cables. Also see if any of them are getting hot. Also check and see if your missing a fuse someplace.

The battery cables all appear to be in very good condition (they are about 3 years old but barely had any use in that time. I did see a small, maybe 3mm gap of the covering over the wire, at the terminal end to the battery. I had just covered that with electrical tape earlier today to be sure no moisture got in. No idea why it's pulled away. I took a couple pictures, I'll have to download them in a little bit.
Stupid question after all these years with this motor, but I've never seen a fuse on this thing and I wasn't aware that there are any?

Look harder for the fuse. The way everything is out in the open, that should be easy to trouble shoot.

Boobie, I just went through my entire parts catalog and there is no listing for any fuses at all. Are you sure there are fuses in this motor? Any hints?

Safety switch on the throttle gear.

No fuse.

Is it original, or has it gotten a 12Volt conversion? Here is original diagram.

Simple 12 volt circuits can be challenging.----I try to avoid explaining the trouble shooting anymore.

I had a broken wire to the mercury switch on my 1957 Lark caused the same problem. Check there.

FR I believe it's had the 12 volt conversion. It has the electric start and I'd replaced the solenoid a few years back during my overhaul (had a big issue there when I bought a solenoid that looked like the correct part but wasn't the same inside. Finally resolved that) Lindy, where would I find the mercury switch to check that wire? Racerone, awwww..c'mon, you're up for the challenge ;) You guys all got me this far. It's wonderful to see all of your names again

Mercury switch, safety switch--same thing. It's on the throttle gear, port side of the engine. Tilts as you operate the throttle. All bets are off if the wiring isn't original,, since we don't know what/how it was done. If you find the mercury switch, try grounding it and see what happens,

I believe this is what you are referring to as far as the safety/mercury switch....That has been disabled since I first got the motor. I asked what that wire went to back when I first started this in 2012. Took awhile for my brain to kick in and remember that. So it's never been connected and it's always run before.

OldBoat, do you mean that the posts on the battery could be incorrect (I'm pretty sure that's not the case as it's brand new and I got it from a battery store that specializes in only batteries). Or do you mean I'm hooking up the cables incorrectly, meaning I'm putting positive to the negative post etc?

There is a gear missing and that mercury switch is not installed properly.
