Re: '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem

Not criticism Willy, but have more of a question, or discussion.

Im worried that the combined strenght of the 3 screws will be too great compared to the slipping properties of the rubber hub.

Installing brass shear pins in these Big Twins to compensate for this will cause constant replacement of the pin I fear due to the motors torque. (Have you seen how she drives! ;) )

Again, not criticising, as Im not positive, but worry about potentially damaging the powerhead or gearset without proper protection.

Would also like to edit my last post as well, on my cell phone I could not really see the pics posted, now that I can see them on my desktop they are obviously not the gearcase that I was envisioning, but still unburnt fuel/oil mix none the less.

Hey now!!!! (you should see me in a Corvette! Corners like it's on rails, baby!! hehehe).
That's a neat idea WillyClay, I can't see why it wouldn't work but then you guys started talking about foot pounds of torque and stuff and totally lost me. My idea would be to try it and see if it worked, if it didn't well..I have oars. But when you mentioned the possibility of it messing up the gears, heck no! I'm not going back into that transmission without a darned good reason! I'll hold onto the old prop, just in case, but if I can keep finding used vintage ones for $20, I'll go with that! But I agree, I like fixing up things better than buying new so I'm open to suggestions. Good to know that oil drip isn't anything bad. When I trailer it, I tilt the motor up and I started noticing that after I started using the transom saver to do that so you are right that its probably just the unspent oil leaking out. I most definitely won't plug that drain hole!
Motor has been winterized: fogging oil used, Sta-bil in the gas and gear oil checked and topped. The ol' boat will go to our family store's warehouse for her winter hibernation. I've already made a list of what I need for next Spring when I paint the trailer, boat and rest of the motor. If I could only hibernate too and wake up with the green grass and flowers!
