Got this near mint Merc that was rebuilt
throughout including impeller etc. Don't want
to take apart if I don't need to(paint is over
nuts and gaskets).
Is there supposed to be water coming from
4 holes on top of driveshaft housing. There is
air pulsing out of holes but no water. Turned
off before overheating . Checked for plugged
intake holes , no problem . p.s had been run for a year after rebuild. thanks !

If it's not punping water then you have no choise other than to repair the pump

My hope was to find someone with first hand knowledge of this particular motor because the
manual doesn't show actual spot water comes from.
Some older motors have weird position.
The four holes also had what seemed like carbon
coating . I was hoping against hope I guess.
Never had one blow so much air and not water!

I have worked on them since the early 60s and you should be getting a mix of water and exhaust from the holes that you are talking about not a stream of water. Ck the water jacket and if it is not hot then you don't have a problem

Ran motor for less than 10 seconds and housing
was warm already . I should have known better,
thanks Laddie , I hope I didn't make it sound
like I doubted you !!!! Now the search begins
for parts and manuals.

Re: 56 mark6 tell tale blowing air/exhaust ?

It may take more than 10 seconds for the water to start cycling through the whole motor. Also, the waterpump is located relatively high up in the mid-section and won't draw unless the water level in the tank is relatively high up, too.

It is a tiny pump and not very robust, so it wouldn't take much abuse to make it not pump. If the motor was ever run dry for even a few seconds it might have been enough to kill it. It's also possible that whomever rebuilt it used a New-Really-Old-Stock pump impeller that was already well aged prior to installation. NOS on impellers isn't always a good thing as they can age on the shelf as well as in a motor...

- Scott
