Re: 57 18 hp Johnson missing

Ok, I finally got the spark issue fixed. Turned out to be a bad condensor. Didn't realize that those go bad very often. While it was running bad I rebuilt the carbeurator and now I am having a problem. To get it to run right I have to turn the high speed needle all the way in to the leanest setting. I took it back apart and adjusted float some, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I must have put something back together not quite right. It runs decent with it adjusted all the way in, but it isn't right. What could I have put together wrong?

Make sure your needle packing is tight. If not it can be a nightmare to get your carb settings correct.

I don't understand what the needle packing is. The needle seems to seat ok. I can blow into the fuel line right side up, but when I turn it upside down I can't blow into it anymore. So the needle is seating ok. Is that what you mean by packing?

the needle goes into a barrel that is threaded to fit into the carb. the packing is the two washers on the end of that tube. To seat the packing tighten the tube. If the packing is loose it lets air in and as already stated will cause hell getting the setting right.
