New to the board, very nice site, I received from a friend at work a 1956 30 hp. and a 57' 35 hp. evinrudes. The 57 is what i an concentrating on at this time for my 15' mirro-craft. motor tuned and worked on roughly 9 years ago
ran for maybe 10 hours and put into storage because it stalled on his wife in the local river near the dock, scared her silly and she told him just buy a new motor.. fast forward to now ordered manuals , tiller handle as my boat has no controls, changed gear lube, plugs, installed a starter soleniod and momentary pushbutton to operate solenoid. wires sound no cracking ,plyable etc.pulled lower end found impeller sound nice condition. will get new before
putting into service. fuel pump upgrade installed already, fresh gas tcw3 2 cycle oil 24to 1 and fired up, found to run kinda rough , noted upper cylinder
decompression stem activated, backed off adjustment slightly valve evidently
seated, motoridles much better now, adjusted top carb needle valve to 3 in this whole process. sorry if this seems like i am rambling , I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl. To be moving up to a 35 from a 9.9.

Now to some questions .
1) can i use the metal two hose fuel tank with a single hose and just put a piece of foam or something into the pressure side barb on the tank for venting
and will the 1/4 inch connection and hose give enough fuel or should i increase to 3/8 at the tank to the fuel pump. 3 to 4 foot long fuel line?

2) under the prop nut is a single brass washer, leaving a small amount of play
(thrust) with the impeller on the shaft. should this be shimmed. shear pin pretty good condition. not bent.

3) no provisions on motor to allow motor to be locked in a tilted position
any quick simple quick Ideas for the tilt. without going to power tilt. if it
could even be done on this motor.
model 25930

thanks for bearing with me.

unless the motor has been altered, they have no fuel pump. the motor pumped air into the pressure tank, forcing fuel to the carb. you need 2 lines air and fuel. or you need to convert to a fuel pump. tilt lock we used a 1x2.

there is a little play in the prop.

You would be wise to buy a proper fuel tank and sell the pressure tank if you don't need it. They are worth $$. You can get a cheap single hose tank from Wally World.
Or better yet, support our host iboats and buy it here.

The brass washer on the prop just lays in there It is a thrust washer in the event that the hub slips upon jamming it in the gravel pit.

No tilt lock in those days. You can adjust the friction by the nut on the tilt bolt to where it stays up under normal operation. For trailering, get a support bracket here at iboats. Yeah, we used to use a hunk of wood. But make sure you tie it in there or it will fall out on the first bunp you hit and the motor will come crashing down.

F R , thank you, I am testing it with a 6 gallon plastic single line tank at
this time , just thought it would be neat to use the old school tank.

I will look into the support bracket

I agree with Frank and if you are not going to us the old tank send it to me I will use it. I'll trade you a new tank for it.

Steve,

If it is the old school metal tank you are looking for, Johnson switched over to a single line tank in the Mid 60's. Tank is still metal but you can use it on a single line system. You can find them on Ebay, usually for much less then the dual line tanks.
