You do have the compression relief valves in that '57 powerhead, but they cannot be used with the '56 rewind starter which does not have the activation cam or arm (which both are missing also). The decompression valves are designed to momentarily reduce cylinder compression to aid in rope starting so you do not wear yourself out. The motor must be properly tuned, however.

Seems you're missing a lot of bits and pieces...with some rather important to a smooth starting and running motor.

EBay is an option, but it will get expensive.

My advice would be to show up at one of the "Antique Outboard Club Meets" and tell them what you're trying to do. I'm sure there would be a bunch of "old timers" there with boxes of the stuff you're looking for just happy to help you out...especially new individuals . I'm not sure of where you are, but there are plenty of local chapters in the USA.

I bet, you could even acquire electric start stuff on the cheap

Thank you very much for that advice, I never that about swap meets. I'm located in north east Iowa just below the land of a thousand lakes. I'll look into a swap meet! Other than the compression release what else is missing that you saw?

You are missing everything for the 35hp from under the cowl minus the powerhead. to use the compression relief, as stated, you need the correct recoil and carb/silencer, etc...

If I were you, I would be on the lookout for a 35hp parts motor, perhaps with a blown powerhead, to get it cheap, under 50 bucks. If you try to buy everything you need piece meal, it will get too expensive for what it is. As stated, get out to an AOMCI meet, post an ad on the website, that is your best bet!

Do not go to a "general swap meet"... you will not find what you're looking for! Go to an antique outboard club meet. They will always have parts and motors...and most especially, people with garages of stuff you're looking for.

You'll make some good connections with people. Someone will help you.

I actually had it running this fall, the 30hp carb actually kept up with motor I'll post an add on Craigslist and an aomc board to see if I can get my hands on the compression relief linkage and pull start I didn't put it in the water because of its age and knew it would need the lower unit rebuilt, wasn't holding oil, this thing is kind of a mixed up mess, but I really think it's a cool project and a great way to learn the old omc's I've rebuilt trucks built drag cars and been working on 4 strokes for a long time, but these 2 strokes kind of stump me I'm very thank ful for all of your advice everyone
