I am going to look at a `57 -7.5hp today that the guy says runs fine but its going to need the lower unit resealed as it leaks water into it. Besides the usual spark, compression check is there anything else to look for on these older motors. He wants $50 for it and it looks to be complete and in nice shape, but i don`t think he has the tank with it so i wont be able to run it. I was just kind of looking for a winter project, is it worth it?

expect to buy a tank, coils, impeller and carb kit
approx $175 with the biggest expense being the pressure tank

If it has good compression, I'd pay $50 for it. To drop the lower unit on that motor, you have to pull the powerhead to get to the shift rod connection.

Sure it is worth $50, unless it is a junker. And of course you can't expect to get a tank with it for that price. A tank is worth more than that.

Well i picked-up the motor today, its was showing 75lbs compression even on each cylinder, has a nice strong blue spark and it came with the pressure tank and it has a 3-blade brass prop on it . It looks like too be in decent shape. The previous owners said his dad bought it new in `57.

Yep, looks identicle! I`ve never had a pressure tank before, how many times do i pump it up at first and how often/ how much do i need to give it some pressure when running? Thanks, I`m sure i`ll be asking many questions as i start to work on this motor.

Make sure the cap is tight, connect the line and pump the primer on the tank till you can`t anymore, means the carb is full. Once the motor is up and running it maintains it`s own pressure buy a pair of check valves behind the intake. Once you are done running it loosen the cap to let the air pressure out, before disconnecting the quick connect.

My username-here at iboats. Mine is a '57'.

I know a lot about that engine. 75# of compression is great. Run some Sea Foam (NAPA) through it.

You will probably looking at points, condensors and coils, water pump-soon. Don't be afraid-normal stuff.

Good luck on that one - since they didn't make a 35hp in 1965. It would be a 40hp.

Nice lookin old '55 Fleetwin. They had that style midsection in '54 and '55 As did the old Johnson CD-10, 11 and 12. Auquasonic was a trademark name for 1955. 1956 was a design change in the midsection, that went till 1979. Nice looking little motor, reguardless. You did good for the price. If you got the tank with it for 50 bucks, that that's excellent.

Re: `57 evinrude fleetwin 7.5

Thanks for the nice comments! I sandblasted the motor and tank and repainted both with plasticote spray cans. The motor got new coils/ points/ wires, new water pump, new lower seals and rebuilt carb. The tank works great -no leaks and holds pressure well. Its no show motor by any means but i really enjoyed redoing it ( my new hobby now). I now have a `75 Evinrude 25 hp that i`m done with the painting, just have to put the motor back together. A 56 johnson 10 hp thats waiting in the wings. Just wanted to say thanks for everyones help as I`m starting to really get to know how to work on these motors because of all of you!
