Hello All. Have had this motor for 40 years- its a 1957 7.5 HP always freshwater, light usage. No previous gear shift or drive problems.

On installing the motor last season, I left the motor in an unstable position in the boat - sitting on one of the boat seats. It rolled over fell about one foot down to the fiberglass deck of the boat.

Now when in forward gear at anything over half throttle it jumps out of gear. Disconcerting. Can't really use motor in this condition.

I am wondering if this is just a linkage alingment problem (ie drive gears ok but linkage not fully "in drive" position. any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, Russ.

My guess is that the shifter shaft is bent just enough to keep it from going all the way into Forward.

There should be a threaded adjuster on the shaft, or you may be able to straighten it.

Good luck. :)

I agrree with JB. Also, if it jumps out of gear too many times it will round the ears on the clutch dog, a fairly costly little part to replace. I would take care of it asap.

If it fell on the shifter it may have damaged the shift yoke or cradle.

I dont know if the 7.5 requires removal of the
power head for service, if it does there is a bell crank under the power head that could be damaged.
