57 seahorse 10 throttle adjustment

Folks,
I couldn't find this in Search or the manual so I hope you all can help.

There is alot of slop in the gear that articulates with the verticle throttle rod. I can nudge it into position temporarily, but it seems like the teeth are worn. This plays havock with the motor as I lack control of the throttle mechanism /magneto plate. At times I can turn the throttle half from "full" throttle toward "stop" before the linkage even moves the magneto plate. The only way to get the throttle wide open is to pull on the throttle rod end.

If I disengage the horizontal gear from the vericle one (there is a flar face on the gear), I can move the verticle gear with my fingers quite a bit before the vericle rod rotates. Should there be a key in there?

I think this is the last thing to fix before I get the boat in the water.

Is there a way to fix this or do I just need to replace the parts?

Yes, there is a key at the bottom end of the vertical rod.

Identify and replace all worn parts.

It looked a little complicated for a newbie but I dismanteled the tiller handle and took out and cleaned everything. There was white lithium grease in there that looked like it was left over from the Eisenhower administration. I was impressed that all the parts are brass. I guess this is to prevent rust?

The teeth on the vetricle throttle gear were worn. Instead of replacing it I put a washer on the brass rod which pushed the horizontal gear a hair further onto the verticle gear and it worked great and saved me $30 for a new gear.

The plastic pin that ran through the base of the verticle throttle rod was sheared off and there was alot of slop in the linkage. I think now that the linkage has no play, I can have better, co-ordinated movement of the magneto, throttle linkage and the engine aught to run better.

The last step is the water pump . I hope to take it to the lake for a shake down cruise and maybe a decarborization this weekend comming up. I have a 14 foot jon boat and I hope to go into the shallower waters of the Roanoke River to fish Stripped bass which start running soon.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped me through this project. It was frustrating at times but in the end lots of fun.It was also a great father-son project.
