I just purchased a little fishing boat with a 58 10 hp sea horse, I am not sure if this motor is a 4 stroke or a 2 stroke, anyone help? I am getting a manual sent to me but wanted to start it up and see if it runs, also is the mixture 24-1. I got the boat from a woman who's husband died, so she could not tell me anything. Thanks for any help.

I have 2 of those engines. They're a QD-19. They're good but the lower units are known for being weak and letting go eventually. (mine did)

It is definitely 2 stroke. Mix the oil 24:1 with the gas. Use TCW-w oil only. I use fully synthetic for less smoke and less pollution.

I have the parts manual I can email you if you want, send me a PM with your email address and engine model and I'll send it to you.

You might want to do yourself a favor and look at the "top secret stuff" threads at the top of this forum so you'll know what to do with the high speed and slow speed knobs in case they've been moved, and how to set/clean the points and possibly replace the coils in case they're bad. Make sure it's pumping plenty of water out of the exhaust relief in the midsection. You should also be sure to clean your tank out really well in case it has crud in it from sitting for a while. A new water pump impeller is probably going to be in your future if you don't want to burn the motor up.
Good luck,

Thanks for the help. I did get it in the warter and running, started right up and sounds good. I am going to take it in and have it checked out and tuned up, and the lower unit checked out, thanks again for the help.

Do yourself a favor; get the manual and learn to wrench on this motor yourself. First off, most shops won't touch a motor this old. A lot of the time the costs of repair/maintenance is more than the motor is worth. Second, for the most part these motors are bullet-proof if maintained properly; there is just not much to them, and the systems are very easy to understand. Learning how to keep these motors running is not very difficult and there is a sense of personal pride to be using a motor that dates back to Eisenhower Administration!

I agree with eavega! There's not point in buying/using a motor that old if you can't work on on it yourself, which is pretty easy and basic tools can do most jobs. You can take off the whole powerhead with a 7/16 end wrench, a pair of pliers, and a good flathead screwdriver.
Good luck either way,

I remember these engines well and fondly. Points set at .020, sparkplugs set at .035, carburetor low speed needle should be run in until it seats (GENTLY!!) and backed out 2 1/2 turns as a preset, the high speed needle should be backed out 3/4 of a turn. These settings are usually just a bit rich but will allow the engine to run so you can fine tune it.
