Im looking at one for a vintage restoration. Price is cheap $100.00 with controls,Its a 63 johnson electromatic, owner says it runs, works, I really need the short shaft model at 15", this one has the long shaft 20". I notice the only difference from the outside is a 5 inch spacer on top of the lower unit. Is this unit removable to make it a 15? Im still going to ppurchace this if only for parts, also is the cowling interchangeable between the evinrude and johnson? Last are most of these years interchangabe between the years.

There is a lot of interchangeability between years on those motors. Some stuff bolts right up, some might need small modifications, but it's not unusual to find 75hp powerheads on older 50hp chassis. Earlier cowlings had a steel clip to hold it down in front, while later ones had a handle with a clasp inside. Fairly easy to swap belly pans around to get the clasp with the right cowling for your desired "look".

There's more to it than simply taking out the spacer. You'd need a short driveshaft, too, and to take 5-inches out of the water tubes. Not hard to do if you have the parts - the driveshaft simply pulls right out.

It's a relatively easy motor to restore, especially if you have the battery-distributor ignition. Some parts are hard to find, but nearly all of them are out there somewhere (though it can take some sleuthing to find them). Yes, you'll need the short driveshaft. You can use a pipe cutter to cut the water pipes without unbolting them from the powerhead adapter (which requires much work). I tried to document most of my work with my motor on the forum. Search my name; you may find something helpful or you may find too many long-winded threads on my part. Can't hurt to look though.

Got nearly any part that I needed from Dan Gano at ganotech.com.

Re: '58-'65 v4 75 hp

Doing some more reading up on these 75hp models and someone on the net points out a standard lower unit or a heavy duty one.does this have anything to do with the magnetic select shift model.someone mention one of the hd units in a thread on a 65 horse unit?. I have found a salvage in my area that I counted 9 1st generation 58-68 motors, most still attached to a boat. none are the short shaft im looking for ,Im going back to see if i can identify a hd lower unit!heavy duty ones have several screws arount the skeg as apposed to the normal unit??? I am still after the 62 long shaft electric shift Johnson running for $100. Its a start.

The Heavy Duty units were mechanical shift. They can be identified by the shift lever on the starboard side of the motor. The HD unit gearcase also splits top to bottom, and there are about 8-10 screws holding it together.
