i have a 58-68 50 hp v-4 it will idle fine but when taking off it dogs around 2000 rpm. when i pull it out of the water i have oil and gas dripping from the exhaust. i have adjusted the idle needles for a smooth idle. but have no top end. also have presents of water in the gear oil, could this be part of the problem? oh by the way it is a evinrude. also could you help me narrow the year and model of this engine serial # 50514 07835.

She's a 58 Starflite, 15" leg. The water in the gear oil has nothing to do with the bogging problem. That sounds like a sync and link problem. With the cover off look at the rollers on the cam that advances the ignition along with the throttle. If their worn or missing this is the problem. See that manual you recommended down the page won't specificlly get into the exact cure on this engine for this. It super critical for any 2 stroke outboard to get the right amount of spark advance for the right amount of throttle to make her come to life. It's been to long for me to remember which way to adjust things to take up slack for worn rollers, but chances are you are not getting enough spark advance for the amount of fuel your feeding her.

Another thing you want to check on that old stump pulling fuel hog is the needle valves. Make sure they are not worn(necked)down near the tips. This will make them about impossible to adjust right. These engines burned so much fuel this was common problem.

hay big4 i cheked the synk-n-lynk and the magneto was not opening all the way when the throttle was wide open that could be part of the problem. i'm gonna give that a try first and see what happens. thanks.

Hey dan&dawn The 50514, same thing I have. if you do not have the timing carb sync procedure e-mail me and I will send it to you. there are 6 timing sync marks to line up! Read read and read the proceedure locate all, everything it talks about before you start. Got mine not running about 8 weeks ago read a lot on this board and learned a lot.
Idle jets can be adjusted one at a time but should be kept equal, starting point 1+1/5 turns from all the way in. If it still has the plastic keepers on the adjustments push them toward the carb and then you can reposition them on the screw.
High speed jets, the knob on the top of the carb lifts up to gain more adjusment. starting point 3/8 turn out from all the way in, then best WOT.
WOT per my Evinrude manual is for planing out then back out to 3/4 throtle. You will drop maybee 5 mph off WOT. Worth it for the miles per tank.
Spark plug gap .030
points (dual) .020
Would be good to open magneto clean and relube. Mine was dry and ran smoother after cleaning!
Water in the lower unit me too, even after paying to have it resealed!

also if you watch the linkage as you throtle it up, you will see that the carb dosn't come into play (much) untill past 3/4 throtle

Richard
