Racerone: I think you're saying that I should add the gasket that I thought didn't belong. Do you have a part # for that gasket.

The biggest problem if I add the gasket is I have to remove the pump housing from the driveshaft. This means that I have to remove the roll pin which will probably break. They are a pain to take out and a pain to add and very delicate.

Really-----Why not pull the driveshaft out !------Look up the part # in the 79 model 6 HP parts listing.-----So does your motor have the 79 model 6 HP water pump ?----You seem reluctant in answering / providing information..----Not sure why you would have issues with a simple roll pin either.----And does your motor have the original 58 lower unit or a newer one fitted ??

Does the driveshaft just pop out and pop back in? I'm not reluctant; I just don't know. I'm not an outboard mechanic. What I've learned or not learned is amateur experience with different models over the years; a hobby, not a business. Why would I be mysterious (what info?) when I'm just trying to solve a problem with the hope that those that know better than me can help? If you want to help okay. If not don't. Yes, the roll pin is a pain and will break and they're not 59 cents. My motor has the original lower unit; like I said it has had very little use. thanks

They are 19 cents at the local hardware store !!----Yes the driveshaft simply pulls out.----I have asked you to confirm that you have the 79 model 6 HP pump , but no reply on that.------I can not see your motor !

You asked me about a half hour ago to confirm that I have a 79 6 hp pump . It's pitch black out here and I have limited time periods to work on the motor. A response in a half hour; for real? You say I can't see your motor. Neither can I as it's night and the motor is outside. As for the pin; I ordered the factory original and it was about $8. Most of the time it's hard to find 'hardware store' equivalents and to be sure they are the same quality.
Working on these motors is a hobby; please understand.

Put in the gasket between the plastic pump body and the plate hoping this would solve the problem. Put the lower in the water tank with the drill on the top of the driveshaft; no water pumping.
