Hey guys, just bought a 7.5 evinrude model 7524(1958). My question? The steering handle is broke right where the throttle handle and the fuel connector are. Saw one on e-bay off of a 1956 (7.5) part number 376495. Are these years interchangeable or was the 58 all alone? Thanks.

Yes, PN 376495 will fit. Replacing that the tiller bracket requires pulling the powerhead - which you have to do anyway to disconnect the shift rod when you replace the waterpump impeller....

thx. was afraid I'd have to do that. Bought the motor and tank for 100.00? good deal I guess. Tank is rusted on outside, but inside is great.

Those steering brackets get broken by pushing down on the tiller to tilt the motor. Don't do that.

before I worry about that steering handle! Just did a compression test. Got 90 psi in both cylinders. checked for spark. no spark. took off flywheel everything under the hood looks new. Checked wires at the coil, they were loose. Reset points. Got spark on one,but not the other. Now mind you I was just holding the plug and wire and got a good little shock! Lol. I did get a little shock from the other one, but then it stopped? Any ideas.

Get an adjustable in line spark gap tester, set it to 1/4", the spark should jump that gap with a bright blue ZAP

Clean the points with acetone and a business card, ensure they are at 020.

loose plug wires at the coil sounds like they werent installed correctly, they screw in , not push in. if that is the case, id trim 1/4" off the coil end of the wires, remove the coils and mag plate , and screw the wires into the coils.

Anywhere on the powerhead really. I use head bolts as they are right there.

hightrim, just went out in the garage and used the inline tester. no spark on one and the other had spark coming out of the boot, not through the tester. bad wire?

Re: 58 evinrude 7.5

Pull the boot off, cut the wire back, leaving enough to still reach the plug, then trim back another 1/8" or so of the insulation only so that the copper core is stickout out. Spread the copper wires, and fold them back over the wire, then reinsert the spring through the center of the wire, and put on a new boot. If it was arcing through the old boot it is junk. Now retest/
