I have an Evinrude lightwin 3HP serial # 3026-12238 I think it is a 1958 feel free to confirm the year for me? I checked the compression and it is 100 psi on both is this good? I cleaned the carb and put new gas and put it in the water and I got it to start:) what are the setting for the lean rich knob? it is nice to hear it get back to life!! I had my infrared thermometer pointed at the head and it went up to 140 F so I shut it down and I was wondering if this is normal operating temp or is it over heating? the water was coming out like a mist from the top rear off the leg!! I wonder if I can add a pee hole to it?
I was going to change the impeller and see if this help!! and I want to know the spark plug gab?and thanks for any advice

Re: 58 Evinrude lightwin 3HP general question

Model 3026 is indeed a 1958 3hp Evinrude.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

.030 is the plug gap setting.

There's a possibility that you may need a new water pump impeller, though. 140 degrees seems pretty warm. Those little 3hp Evinrudes are great motors. The best fuel mix is 25:1

Good Luck with it.

Re: 58 Evinrude lightwin 3HP general question

The 3hp head is only water cooled around the edges. There is fire on the other side of the center portion and it gets hot. The flat plate on the side of the powerhead also gets very hot. These are normal conditions.
A water pump replacement is wise in any case, since you don't know the history of it. It may be working today but not tomorrow.

The spray holes are all you really need as an indicator. They served the purpose for over 50 years.

Change the impeller...doesn't cost much and you can get it in the Iboats mall. I did this on a Ducktwin recently and it made a world of difference. Runs cooler and better.

Re: 58 Evinrude lightwin 3HP general question

Your compression is fine. It's actually better than fine - those little 3s will run with 60-70 psi per hole. Definitely replace the impeller - cheap insurance. You should have change from a $20 if you shop around a bit. Won't take but a half hour to replace it, either... Be careful not to pull the driveshaft out when you do it - they can be a pain to put back in. Be sure to grease the top splines and make sure the o-ring is present in the groove at the top...

yep, you did good , it sounds like. I think you'll get years of good service with that little booger. Those were great little engines. I'm rebuilding a 4hp for a guy now and I bet he'll be happy.:D
