Hi,
I just joined this site because I just bought this '58 Four Fifty. BY all accounts, it's original and still runs fine (hard to believe). So, now I need to get some manuals, and help locating spare parts, such as water pump kits, magneto stuff, carb repair stuff, etc, etc.
Any leads on those items to steer me in the right direction?
Thanks
Verne

Welcome to the site!!

That motor (father had one on a14' Starcraft r/bout) would pull FOUR! skiers on two skis up! Let's see ANY year Merc 50 hp do that! But man you better own a service station 'cause it is THIRSTY!

Q - Where can I get parts for my old Evinrude? or outboard?
A - While Evinrude? Genuine Parts stocks a large variety of maintenance-type parts for outboards back to the mid-50's, older outboards may be more difficult to find parts for. There are several dealers who specialize in older, obsolete parts for both brands. While there are others, these four are known to have a fairly large inventory of hard-to-get parts. As others are identified and confirmed, we will try to add them to the list.

Re: '58 Four Fifty parts

Thanks very much;) That's just what I was looking for.

KB1, I've heard they're THIRSTY. I've read that part of the reason is because of a high pressure fuel system that by-passes fuel into the exhaust at low speeds to prevent loading up and fouling. I won't have a chance to fiddle with it for some time, but I'd like to try to modify the by-pass system to re-direct the fuel back to the tank rather than the exhaust. I wonder if anyone has tried that?

Thanks again for the references.

It has been done before. The vapours have to be burned or vented to avoid a combustible build-up inside the engine compartment.

I've read that raw fuel was directed into the exhaust, but whether it's liquid or vapor, I'd like to direct it back to the tank if I can rig it up. That should help fuel economy a bit, I'd think.;)

Look at the starboard side of the powerhead, near the base. That horizontal hose is the drain hose. Disconnect it and catch the fuel that comes from it. Remember, it is gasoline, oil, and air. A highly combustable mixture. Don't burn or blow yourself up.

That drain is not the only reason they burn a lot of gas. A mis-adjusted carburetor will suck the sides of the gas tank in. OMC came out with a modification kit to improve the gas mileage. I don't think the kit is available anymore.

Send me your e-mail address in a PM and I will send you the service bulletin for the carburetor modifications.

I'd also be interested in what the bulletin said. What kind of mods are they? Does it capture or recycle the dumped fuel?

Steve, The boat just got picked up today. The motor is the 512 model. IT had been sitting for 2 years since it ran. Squeezed the fuel bulb, set the choke and turned the key and it started within 3 revolutions. Ran smooth, ran up the rpm a bit then let it back down to a smooth idle! I was really surprised. Still very nice original paint and a very clean motor. Must be darn low hours.
I know I'll be changing the water pump impeller as a precaution, and checking gear lube. I may also change the fuel lines to be safe with today's gas. I can post more photos later if anyone is interested.
My email is Fine09@verizon.net for the parts manual you offered. Thanks very much for the kind offer.:)

512? Never heard of it. I just sent you the manual for the V4-10, the 1958 50.

Steve, My buddy told me "five hundred twelve" over the phone. HE meant 50012.

Here's a photo of the motor plate.

Nothing has come through. The "09" in the email is zero 9, not "oh"9.

Thanks again:)

Oh, it's the Evinrude... I was thinking Johnson... It's the Johnson one I have, but they should be virtually identical... it's 6gb... It's still sending! Might go overnight :) My 'highspeed' here in the country is not that high!

Re: '58 Four Fifty parts

Vern, Good luck with that motor. I had two of them for many years. They are long on low end power, short on speed and thirsty, and extremely reliable.

PM Joe Reeves and ask him if you can run them on a 50::1 gas oil mix. I think you can, but he is the expert.

If you need some used parts you might try Trixie's in Bayville NJ. They had a bunch of parts for the older Johnnyrudes. I think you can use the points from the old big twin motors, as well as the condenser. That motor has two sets of points, one condenser and a single coil. Look for the second set of timing marks on the dissy, since they are a bit out of the way.

I built a fuel recirculation system for my fat-fifty. I installed a brass, threaded hose nipple in the cap of a plastic pint 2 cycle oil bottle. I then cut a square hole in the bottom of the oil bottle and also cut a round hole the size of the fuel line in the bottom of the oil bottle. I installed the cap on the oil bottle, wired the bottle (inverted), next to the intake screens and installed the fuel drain hose onto the hose nipple. I ran this to a seperate fuel tank in the boat. Now find the hose that runs from the bottom of the intake manifold, behind the fuel pump, to the starboard side of the engine. Unhook the hose from the side of the motor, cap the brass nipple on the motor, and route the hose into the oil bottle where you cut the round hole.

Now as the motor runs, it will pump gasoline vapor and liquid gas and oil into the oil bottle. The motor will suck the vapor in and the liquid will drain under gravity into the tank. Now you won't blow up.

Re: '58 Four Fifty parts

Thanks Chris;)
I'm very happy with my purchase. It came from the cousin of the original owner who inherited it 3 years ago, so it's basically a one owner boat/motor. It wasn't run in 2 years, but when it was primed this past Friday, it took about 3 revolutions and it fired right up. Ran it up a bit then it settled down to a smooth idle. I'm amazed in the original condition of it.
I will rig up something like you did to divert the unused fuel from dumping in the water. And I will be SURE not to blow myself up....

What is the black box under the distributor cap?

That black box under the distributor is the thermostat. They crack if water freezes in them. You might see a calcium deposit where there's a crack; usually on the bottom. If you unscrew the screws on the top it will spring apart and you'll see two valves, the one on the port side with the thermostat or vernatherm.

Chris, sounds like a good idea. I guess you dont have any photos of the set up do you? Did you notice much difference in the fuel economy afterwards? I'm hoping to get my '57 J35 up and running this summer and might try something similar.
