I have a 1958 5.5hp Johnson, model cd-15. I need to replace the water pump. I was going to take the bolts off the lower end to drop it down to get access to the water pump(impeller). Someone told me that I may have to disconnect the drive mechanism also. If this is so, how do I go about doing it? If neither procedure is correct how do I procede?

Thanks

take out four bolts holding lower unit on, ( maybe 5 if ther's one on top to the rear) Should be a plate about have way up the exhoust housing with two screws in it, take it off , look for shift shaft coupler. Shift engine so that you have access to lower bolt. Remove that bolt, unit should then come off.

Hi Radar
As there is no window plate on this model to disconnect your shift shaft. You will have to remove the power head assembly. This will gain you access to the shift shaft, disconnnect it here. Then procede with removal of the lower unit.

Hi Alcan

Thanks for the response. Since working on these old motors has recently become a hobby of mind please excuse the inexperience or ignorance which ever it may be. When you say remove the powerhead, your not talking about the cylinder head are you? I believe your talking about the whole top motor assembly aren't you? If this is the case this procedure sounds a little more complex than it is. What is the correct way to remove the powerhead?

Radar

Hi Radar,
Actually, popping the powerhead off isn't a big deal. It's held on with 7 screws, plus you'll have to undo the fuel lines from the motor. The most you might need to replace is the gasket between the powerhead and midsection if it tears in the process. You should be able to either cut a new one, or possibly find one at a dealership.

Make sure the washers, spring, etc. at the top of the driveshaft are present and reassembled in the proper order. Grease the splines of the driveshaft before reassembling into the crankshaft.

There are two nuts that hold the end of the shift rod to the shift handle that need to be removed to drop the lower unit.

- Scott

I have a '57 Evinrude 7 1/2, and also have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod. (I think the mid-shaft connection begins with the 10hp models.) As Chinewalker points out, removing the powerhead isn't a problem on these motors -- and I'm speaking as a hobbyist (which I am), not as a mechanic (which I'm not). It's a good idea to check out the water and exhaust passages while the powerhead is off and everything is accessible -- maybe flush them out.
