Discovered a few problems while replacing seals and impellor.
The driveshaft has only a nub left where the impellor sits, and want to know how to get the thing out so I can be sure the impelor turns properly.
The lower unit was missing the pinion support or retainer when I pulled the unit off. Can I still get one somewhere, and is it a critical piece.
Last, the gearcase it pretty banged up and has been welded in the past. Can you find a gearcase that will interchange with this old 35. The model number on the motor is
GG8997C
Thanks for any help

Your best bet would be to buy a parts motor with a blown powerhead say. It will be MUCH cheaper than trying to round up the parts that you need. What area are you in? You could try a salvage yard, look in the FAQs for a list, or put a wanted ad in the webvertize section of the aomci.org

You could likely get a parts motor for under $50

The drive shaft support is part number 302552. www.marineengine.com has more than 10 in stock. $5.14 ea.

Yes you need it IF it has the original drive shaft and pinion gear. The design was changed in later years and the support was no longer used.

BTW, your motor is a 1959, not 1958. But they are virtually the same.
